The First 5 Seconds on Your Homepage Decide Everything

Visitors give you seconds, not minutes. Here's what has to be on-screen instantly for them to stay.

The average visitor decides whether to stay on your website in less than five seconds. Not five minutes. Five seconds. Everything you want them to eventually understand has to be telegraphed instantly.

What has to be visible without scrolling

  • What you do, in plain language.
  • Who it's for.
  • Why they should trust you (a logo bar, a stat, a real photo — something).
  • The next action to take.

The clarity test

Show your homepage to someone outside your industry for five seconds, then close the tab. Ask them what your company does and who it's for. If they can't answer clearly, your hero is failing — and no amount of clever design further down the page will save it.

Why this matters more than ever

Attention is the scarcest resource on the internet. Buyers open 12 tabs at once. If your first screen doesn't earn the next scroll, you don't get one. Rewriting a hero section is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make to an existing site.
